Branding a bun, in five steps
- Heat the stamp. Lay the face on the grill plate for two to three minutes, or sweep a torch across the back of the head. Aluminium must never glow.
- Oil the face on a piece of foil with a high-smoke-point oil. It is what lets the bun come away clean.
- Try it on a spare bun first and count the seconds. That count is your setting for the whole service.
- Press straight down, or roll the face gently over a domed top. One to three seconds is usually enough; if the mark is pale, hold longer rather than pushing harder.
- Put it back on the plate between orders. The solid head stays at working temperature far longer than a thin plate, which cools after two or three buns.
Why the bun stamp is aluminium
Free-machining brass, the alloy most branding irons are cut from, contains between 1.6% and 3.5% lead, so it has no place on food. Food stamps are machined from aluminium to EN 602 and ship with a written Declaration of Compliance under Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, a mill certificate and a care sheet.
Aluminium also heats up fast, which is what a busy grill needs between tickets.
Your logo, redrawn for bread
Heat spreads a little as it burns into the crust, so hairlines close up and the holes in letters fill in. We redraw every logo for machining at no cost: thicker strokes, more space between them, no tagline at 75 mm. You see the exact face that will be cut and approve it before any metal is touched.
Send whatever you have: a vector file is ideal, but a PNG, a JPG or a photograph of your menu works.
Questions people ask
- Does it work on sesame or brioche buns?
- Sesame is the one to avoid: the seeds leave gaps in the mark and burn before the crust colours. Brioche browns quickly, so it needs a shorter press than a plain bun; find the time on a spare one.
- How many buns can I mark before it needs reheating?
- It depends on your plate and your pace, so we do not quote a number. A solid head holds heat far longer than a thin plate, and on a grill line the simple habit is to rest it face down on the plate between orders.
- Can the same stamp mark our serving boards?
- Yes. A food stamp is aluminium, and aluminium burns a clean mark into hardwood, so one head does both jobs. The other way round does not work: we never supply brass for food.
- What if my logo has fine detail?
- We simplify it for bread before anything is cut and show you the result. Small type and hairlines do not survive the crust; a bold outline or a monogram does.
